Santa Claus

Santa Claus is a mythical and magical figure who delivers toys to children all around the world every year on Christmas Eve. Santa Claus actually has many names including St. Nick, Kris Kringle and Father Christmas, just to name a few. Santa lives in the North Pole, wears a bright red fur lined suit and is merry, jolly, and some might say, had one too many Christmas cookies in his time. Every year Santa is said to fly around the world delivering presents to good boys and girls in a sled pulled by 9 magical reindeer, Blitzen, Comet, Cupid, Dancer, Dasher, Donner, Prancer, Vixen, and Rudolph, the red nosed reindeer. But while most of these specifics about Santa Claus is fairly well known, especially to children who believe, where Santa Claus came from is a different matter. So where did Santa Claus come from?

Where Did Santa Claus Come From?

The word Santa Claus is derived from the Dutch word “Sinterklaas”, a term for the ancient Christian figure Saint Nicholas. Saint Nicholas lived in the region of Lycia, now known as Turkey, during the 4th century. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of Russia, Moscow, Greece, children, sailors, bakers, shopkeepers, and even wolves. Saint Nicholas has been one of the most beloved saints throughout history known for his exceptional generosity, especially towards children. It was said the Saint Nicholas loved children and would often feed the poor, give gifts to the needy, and sometimes would even sneak up to the window of poor children’s houses and leave bags of gold.

Saint Nicholas and Santa Claus

While Saint Nicholas lived almost 1700 year ago, his legend is still celebrated all across the world every December 25th. While Saint Nicholas reportedly died around 350 A.D., his current whereabouts are actually unknown. According to numerous myths about Saint Nicholas, many around the world believe that he still exists to this day. Many believe that every Christmas eve Saint Nicholas comes down from heaven and delivers presents to all the good boys and girls in the world.

Others believe that Saint Nicholas, blessed by his life of sacrifice and charity, was given the gift of immortal life, so that he could continue his good works of charity and gift giving, as long as children still believed in him. According to this legend Saint Nicholas, later to be known as Santa Claus, still exists today and currently lives in the North Pole where his trusty elves and him work diligently all year round so that every Christmas Eve he can come back and reward all the good children of the world with gifts and goodwill towards men.
